Tassie Trip Day 1 Hobart

To make the most of the holiday break we decided to head to Tasmania on Friday night. It was after 9pm when we landed and so by the time we got our rental car and checked into our hotel we were looking for a late dinner option.

Most places had either closed or were closing but we were lucky enough that the very kind staff kept the kitchen open at Susie Luck’s for us. The staff were all very friendly and the suggested dishes were outstanding. One of the best meals I have ever eaten. I can highly recommend eating there if you are ever in Hobart and enjoy Asian inspired food. We will be going back when we return at the end of our trip around the apple Isle.

Our main reason for flying down on Friday night was so we could fit both Mona and the Salamanca Markets in on Saturday.

We made sure we were on the first ferry to Mona which is a great option if you don’t like big crowds or to line up.

Arriving at the wharf you board a James Bond inspired craft complete with crew dressed in overalls like the baddies from a Bond movie ready to take us out to their fort on a island. I’m not sure why but some of the seating are sheep but anyway just go with it.

When you arrive that’s exactly what it looks like – a baddies lair. You are first faced with traversing the 99 steps to arrive in a court yard of artwork including a trampoline which you can use when museum staff are supervising.

A throw back to the mirror room at Luna Park as you enter and then after a quick entrance you make your way down the spiral staircase or ride the glass lift to the bottom floor.

The very first exhibit that catches your attention is the water sculpture which displays words in water droplets linked to the currently most popular words in the news. Andy is totally obsessed by this exhibit.

There is a strange array of “artworks” from a poo machine to a tattooed man.

I’m the first to admit I am not a Gallery girl but the experience is worth the trip out. Plus there is a bar on the cool boat.

The strobe light room is very cool and cycles through a few different displays. The room with the fat car has a ceiling with lights linked to handles that measure your heart right and blink in time to it’s beat. Andy suggested that I take my top up and see if his heart rate increases. I declined.

Amongst the stranger items was a beer vending machine and a random chook wandering around the cafe grounds. Also a look inside what one artist imagines is your brain in action.

A couple of hours to look around was plenty and we headed back to check out Salamanca Markets.

I heard plenty about how great these are and was not disappointed. We treated ourselves to a wallaby burrito and I got some of my favourite lavender hand cream. There’s plenty to look at and try and taste even a few gin stalls that offer tasting.

A day full of fun and friendly locals. Tomorrow is Mount Wellington to Bicheno via Wine Glass Bay.

Photos in the blog are a mix of iPhone snaps and some edited in light room from my Nikon D500. No paid promotion for any retailers mentioned.

  1. Hey girl, love the post – it seems like you guys are having so much fun! Just wanted to point out you’ve got a typo in the second paragraph – “kenos” instead of “kept” the kitchen open. Just in case you missed it! Keep it up, love hearing about your travels!
