Great Ocean Road Adventure – Aireys Inlet Days 4 & 5

Our travel day from Phillip Island to Aireys Inlet to start our Great Ocean Road adventure proper was a bleak and rainy day. We made the most of the day with a few hours in Phillip Island before heading to the mainland and then west. Most of the trip was along highways with nothing very spectacular scenery wise so at least we didn’t waste a day of travel while the sun was shining.

We had a nice lunch in Torquay and a detour to Bells Beach before heading for our modest accomodation in Aireys Inlet.

There wasn’t much hope of a sunset so after checking in we decided to scope out the Spit Point Lighhouse made famous as the home of the Twist family in the Auatralian ABC children’s show Round the Twist which my kids loved to watch.

The beach below the light house has some fabulous rock formations and rock pools best accessed during low tide.

After a rainy Friday the sun rose on Saturday for a windy and chilly day. Today was a rest day from driving so we had more time to explore the along the Great Ocean Road and the coast around Airey’s inlet. To start we headed back to the beach below the Spit Point lighthouse and I had a play with my Lens Ball for the first time. It will take some experimenting but it has good potential for some artsy shots.

After Aireys Inlet Beach we headed back to the east to Anglesea. There was a brisk wind but the sun was warm and lots of people were out enjoying the ocean and the beach. There were lots of interesting rocks and some little caves and rockpools adding interest to the beach.

After a look around Anglesea we headed west again with our next stop Eastview where the Great Ocean Road Memorial stands over the roadway. This year is the 100th anniversary of the building of the Great Ocean Road.

From Eastveiw we headed onto Lorne for lunch. By the time we arrived the grey skies had settled in so rather than take photos we had a lovely seafood lunch at Lorne Pier Seafood restaurant. I had the most devine garlic scallops. After lunch we headed up to Teddy’s lookout where we were treated to the beautiful sounds of a magpie warbling in a tree.

Having checked the sky candy app for sunset we were hopeful of pretty skies despite the rain. Sky Candy was right, it had predicted 64% chance of a pretty sunset with lots of colour and we were rewarded for our blind faith in technology. As we sat in the car in the beach car park we remained the ever optimistic photographers and waited for the rain to pass. We were treated to a sky full oranges, pinks and blues that lasted for a good half hour. I took the chance to have another play with my new Lens Ball and I am pretty happy with the results so far.
